The word list breaks down nicely by length. There were eight four-letter words, like "even," "oven," "vein" and "vote." Five-letter words were scarce, with only four: "event," "given," "ogive" and "ovine." Six-letter words gave you six more, including "invent," "invite" and "voting."

The real points hide at the top end. Seven letters gave you "evening," "invitee" and "venting," and the eight-plus group had "inventing," "invention," "inventive" and "vignette." Notice how much score sits in those longer words. Chasing only the short ones is a slow way to reach Genius.

Letters like I, N and G nearly always hint at an "-ing" word, and that's exactly where "vetoing" came from. Then work backward and ask which root verb uses the remaining letters.
