Introduction

Speaking as a puzzle games developer, I can tell you why the NYT Spelling Bee is so sticky. The first ten words feel easy, and the last five feel impossible. You're staring at a honeycomb with a decent score, and the pangram is hiding in plain sight.

If you've ever closed the app just short of Genius, you know how that feels. Below, I'll walk through how the puzzle works, what a real board looks like, and how to get spelling bee answers without spoiling more than you want.

How the Spelling Bee Actually Works

The New York Times Spelling Bee hands you seven letters in a honeycomb. One of them sits in the center, and it has to appear in every word you make. Words need at least four letters, and you can reuse any letter as often as you like. That last rule trips up new players more than you'd expect. Words like "veggie" or "vetting" only work because you're allowed to repeat letters.

Scoring is simple once you've seen it a couple of times. A four-letter word earns one point. Anything longer earns points equal to its length, so a seven-letter word is worth seven. The pangram, which is a word using all seven letters at least once, adds a seven-point bonus on top of that. Your rank climbs from Beginner up through Genius, and the very top is Queen Bee.

The puzzle resets at 3:00 AM Eastern every day. That means a brand-new set of letters shows up while much of the world is still asleep.

What a Real Puzzle Looks Like

Let's use an actual board, because it makes everything clearer. The most recent puzzle on the page, from Tuesday, September 29, 2026, used the letters E, G, I, N, O, T and V. It had 32 valid answers, a maximum score of 180, and a Genius threshold of 126 points.

The word list breaks down nicely by length. There were eight four-letter words, like "even," "oven," "vein" and "vote." Five-letter words were scarce, with only four: "event," "given," "ogive" and "ovine." Six-letter words gave you six more, including "invent," "invite" and "voting."

The real points hide at the top end. Seven letters gave you "evening," "invitee" and "venting," and the eight-plus group had "inventing," "invention," "inventive" and "vignette." Notice how much score sits in those longer words. Chasing only the short ones is a slow way to reach Genius.

Why the Pangram Deserves Your Attention

A pangram is a sentence or word that uses every letter of a given set. In Spelling Bee terms, it's the one word that touches all seven letters. On that same board the pangram was "vetoing," worth 14 points once you add the bonus. That single word covers a huge chunk of the gap between a decent score and Genius.

Most days there's exactly one pangram, though occasionally you'll get two. So what's the trick to finding it? Look for common endings first. Letters like I, N and G nearly always hint at an "-ing" word, and that's exactly where "vetoing" came from. Then work backward and ask which root verb uses the remaining letters.

If you'd rather skip the hunt entirely, there's a dedicated pangram page that shows it without the rest of the list.

Hints or Full Answers: Pick Your Poison

Not everyone wants the whole list handed over, and honestly, that's the right instinct. Reading every answer turns a puzzle into a checklist. A lighter touch keeps the fun alive.

Start with the hints page if you're one or two words short of a rank. It nudges you without giving everything away. If you like typing in letters and seeing what fits, the solver is a good middle ground. And if you've been stuck for an hour and just want to finish, the full list is right there on the homepage.

Here's my own habit. I set a timer for ten minutes, play blind, then check hints only for words I'm sure exist but can't quite see. It works better than giving up early or peeking too fast.

Catching Up on Yesterday's Puzzle

Everybody misses a day now and then. Maybe you were traveling, or maybe you just couldn't crack it before bed. Checking yesterday's list is a good way to learn, because you can see which words the editors accepted and which obscure ones they left out. That teaches you the puzzle's taste over time.

Today Spelling Bee Answers keeps the previous day's full word list and pangram on the yesterday page, so you can compare it against your own attempt. Try to spot the patterns. You'll often notice that the editors favor everyday words over technical jargon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pangram in the Spelling Bee?

It's a word that contains all seven of the day's letters at least once. Finding it scores the normal word points plus seven bonus points. Most puzzles have one, but a few have two.

How is the NYT Spelling Bee scored?

Four-letter words earn one point each. Longer words earn points equal to their length, and pangrams add seven extra. Your rank rises as your total grows.

What is Queen Bee?

It's the highest status in the game. You reach it by finding every valid word in that day's puzzle. Most players are happy with Genius, so Queen Bee is the true completionist's badge.

When does the puzzle reset?

Every day at 3:00 AM Eastern Time. The old puzzle moves into the archive, and a fresh set of letters goes live.

Is the Spelling Bee free to play?

Playing on the official NYT site requires a Games subscription. The answers, hints and pangram on this page, though, are free with no sign-up.

What is a Bingo?

A Bingo means you've found at least one word starting with each of the seven letters. It isn't an official NYT rank. It's a personal challenge that dedicated players set for themselves.

Wrapping Up

The Spelling Bee rewards patience more than raw vocabulary. Once you understand the scoring, the value of long words, and the pull of that pangram bonus, the daily grind gets a lot less frustrating. You don't need to be a walking dictionary. You need a few good habits and the willingness to look at the same seven letters from a new angle.

Use hints when you're close, use the full list when you're stuck, and always check yesterday's board to sharpen your instincts. Come back tomorrow at 3 AM Eastern, and you'll get a brand-new honeycomb to conquer.
